is extracted by electrolysis. The ore is first converted into purealuminium oxide by the Bayer Process, and this is then electrolysed in solution in molten cryolite - another aluminiumcompound. The aluminium oxide has too high a melting point to electrolyse on its own. The usual aluminium ore is bauxite.

purified Al2O3 is mixed with Na3AlF6 or CaF2 to lower the melting point of the mix and bring conductivity. The fused matrix is electrolysed. Steel cathode and graphite anode are used.
