The SI system, also called the metric system, is used around the world. There are seven basic units in the SI system: the meter (m), the kilogram (kg), the second (s), the kelvin (K), the ampere (A), the mole (mol), and the candela (cd). 

The Standard Meter. The French originated the meter in the 1790s as one/ten-millionth of the distance from the equator to the north pole along ameridian through Paris. It is realistically represented by the distance between two marks on aniron bar kept in Paris. 

The Kilogram Has Gained Weight. The international prototype kilogram is a cylinder of platinum and platinum-iridium alloy, which is kept at the International Bureau of Weights and Measures (BIPM) near Paris. The kilogram may need to go on a diet.
