If 'a' is a positive rational number which cannot be expressed as nth power of same rational number then the irrational number  \sqrt[n]{a} or a¹/n ( the positive nth root of a ) is called a surd (or) radical. The symbol  \sqrt[n]{a} is called radical sign, n is the called the order of the surd (or radical) and 'a' is called radicand.

∛2 , ∛3,......... are the surds of the third order called cubic surds. \sqrt[4]{5} <br />  \sqrt[4]{7}   are the surds of 4th order or bi-quadratic surds.
