tectonic plates are :

the two sub-layers of the earth's crust (lithosphere) that move, float, and sometimes fracture and whose interaction causes continental drift, earthquakes, volcanoes, mountains, and oceanic trenches.

The earth's crust ( outer part ) is divided into 7 major and some minor plates, and these plates r called tectonic plates. They sometimes collide with each other resulting in volcanic eruption, earthquake or tsunami. The largest one is the Eurasian plate.
