a theory in geology: the lithosphere of the earth is divided into a smaller number of plates which float and travel independently over the mantle and much of the earths seismic acitivity occurs at the boundaries of these plates.

TECTONIC PLATE IS ALSO KNOWN AS LITHOSPHERIC PLATE THEY ARE IRREGULAR, MASSIVE,SOLID ROCK COMPOSED OF BOTH OCEANIC AND CONTINENTAL LITHOSPHERE.IT STARTED BEFORE 3-3.5 BILLION YEARS OLD. IT'S CAUSED DUE TO THE STABLE CONVENTIONAL CELLS ARE FORMED AT THE EARTH'S MANTLE.IT STARTED TO SHAPE THE EARTH'S SURFACE BY PLATE TECTONICS NEW CRUST HAS MADE IT'S WAY TO THE SURFACE OF THE EARTH AT SPREADING CENTERS AND SUBDUCTION ZONES. IT SEPARATED PANGEA INTO 7 DIFFERENT CONTINENTS.
