The federal government has three branches - Executive, legislative and judiciary and their responsibilities are Executive branch is responsible for enforcing the law; it's power vested in president. legislative branch is responsible for creation of laws and the judicial branch is responsible for which laws and policies are constitutional or allowable and which are not.
