Adaptation for plants:

Roots:

  • Modifications in shape or size
  • Growth of large number of thin rootlets to penetrate small spaces in soil
  • Long roots penetrating deep into the soil in order to get moisture

Stems:

  • Modified into fleshy, spongy structure that can store moisture. Plants with such fleshy stem are called succulents.
  • Performs photosynthesis

Leaf:

  • Leaf becomes hard and waxy, thick & small, white and shiny
  • Get converted into spines to reduce the loss of water (Cam pathway)

  • Many xerophytic plants lie dormant for years without perishing, When rain eventually comes they pass through an entire cycle of germination, flowering, fruiting & seed dispersion in only a few days
  • Photosynthesis can be done in night in plants like cactus

Adaptation for animals:

Camel (you already know camel's adaptations)

Kangaroo rat:

  • Found in North American deserts
  • Gets water as a byproduct from internal fat oxidation and preserves it by concentration of urine (so that minimum water is required to remove excretory produce)
  • No requirement of water for many days
