in fresh water fishes they have very little salt concentration therefore they have kidneys to hold on to the salt.The kidney is also responsible for balancing water in the body this process is known as osmoregulation .

on the other hand salt water fishes have very high concentration of salt and their kidneys produce very little urine while trying to keep most of the water in their bodies.
