What are the advantages and disadvantages of ethnic groups with large diaspora?
A large diaspora is not a cause, but an effect.
In all cases, there was a very high level of conflict and/or poverty in the homeland that led to emigration.
So it’s inherently advantageous, in the sense that the people who emigrated bet that it was better than the alternative. Of course, if they were expelled or enslaved, they did not do so voluntarily, but in a sense that just means that the alternative was death.
It’s disadvantageous if that bet turns out to be wrong. For example, we now know that the descendants of the Jews who went to Europe would suffer immensely, more than those in the Middle East, let’s say for the sake of argument.
Now regarding the advantages and disadvantages for the home country, if they have one, that is a different story. Overall I like it, it gives people some perspective. I don’t think countries that are smaller than their diaspora — Lebanon or Armenia or Israel or Palestine — can ever become like North Korea.
But I don’t have the perspective of someone who has lived in a very closed country, and Germany and China had plenty of diaspora and still ended up with horrible regimes, same with Tajikistan and Uzbekistan and Afghanistan and Pakistan and so on, so who can say.
