NSG was formed, after India tried its hand on nuclear bomb in 1974 , to control the nuclear technology and non-proliferation. Presently there are 5 Nuclear weapon states and rest 43 NPT signatories are the members of NSG.
Let's me tell how India could get into the NSG group and its benefits are tied to this entry itself. NSG group membership require signing of NPT or CTBT , either of which India has not signed.
Then how come there is a hope of India's entry into NSG? It was civil nuclear deal with USA which paved the way for future bigger roles for India. Civil nuclear deal was one exception given by then NSG members led by USA , even though India was not a signatories of NPT and CTBT. This deal has shown that India is a responsible country and wants to use nuclear energy in peaceful manner. Those countries who are now opposed to India's entry into NSG ( obviously Pakistan) could have blocked that civil nuclear deal. At that point Pakistan agreed to American pressure and civil nuclear deal was locked.
Now comes the NSG, presently NSG controls major commercial activities in nuclear materials and technology transfer in the world. The major powers which are either producer of fuel or which are manufacturer of technologies are calling the shots in nuclear trade. India ,as a growing power has capacity to provide nuclear fuel- Thorium and nuclear technology in future. The biggest benefit of India's entry would mean that Pakistan is blocked from NSG because entry into NSG is through consensus only which would be a very significant strategic achievement.
Now all the 4 major Nuclear weapon states i.e. USA, UK,France and Russia has agreed to India's entry into NSG. It is only China which is causing trouble as it is lobbying for Pakistan. China may also demand that similar concession should be given to Pakistan also which is not even possible by any imagination considering their past activities. The best course of action for India would be to persuade China and bring it into confidence.
