The advantages of having these small area “close to scale” maps are enormous. They allow for accurate estimation of flood plains, road and construction project integrity, wildlife habitat identification, environmental management, land use planning, etc…. the list goes on and on.

When you look at a map, you will probably see a line drawn somewhere near the bottom, or in one of the corners, that is labeled the 'map scale'. This line shows the scale, or proportion, of the map to the actual place that is being portrayed by the map.
