Basic characteristics of living things are as follows-

1. Growth

2. Reproduction

3. Metabolism

4. Consciousness

5. Cellular Organisation

1. Growth- Increase in mass or overall size of a tissue or organism or it's parts is called growth.

It is a permanent increase in size of an organ or its parts or even of an individual cell and it never can be back.

•Growth is the result of metabolism when the synthetic reaction or anabolism is more than that of destructive process or catabolism than growth occurs.

2. Reproduction- Production of new individual or progeny is called reproduction.

•Reproduction in case of multicellular organisms is production of progeny possessing features more or less similar to those of parents.

•Reproduction is not found in any non-living object.

3. Metabolism- The total chemical reactions happening in a living body is metabolism.

•All living organisms both unicellular and multicellular exhibit metabolism.

• Also we should remember that metabolism is the sum of total chemical reactions performing in the living body, it is not the sum of few or more living reactions.

4. Consciousness - It is an ability to sence the surrounding environment and respond to these environmental stimuli is called as consciousness.

•This is the most special feature of living things. Even plant shows consciousness but in order to respond they are dependent on external factors like water, temperature etc.

• As we know humans are very fast to respond towards external stimuli and even we can think or predict about possible changes of surroundings also we can be prepare itself according to the surrounding situations. We change our clothes season to season is an example of self great human consciousness.

5. Cellular Organisation- All living organisms are composed of cells. Some are composed of a single cell and are called unicellular organism while other like us are composed of many cells, and are called multicellular organism.

•Cell is the basic unit of life.

• Also even unicellular organisms are capable of independent existence and performing essential functions of life even having a single cell.
