Hinayana yana or Theravada Buddhism was the earlier and simpler form of Buddhism. Mahayana developed a new form of Buddhism which had many rituals.

mahayana Buddhists believed that Buddha was God and worshipped him whereas hirayana Buddhists did not. this was the major difference.
