Firstly, cars mostly run on fossil fuels, that is, diesel or petrol which are non-renewable sources of energy. When the engine of the car is on, combustion of these fossil fuels continues to provide the necessary power.
Secondly, the combustion of fossil fuels causes air pollution. So whenever the car stops at a signal, we should switch off the engine.
Lastly, car engines in idle mode produce a vibration which sometimes can cause disturbance to the passengers inside the car. So we should switch off the engine of the car whenever it is possible.
