o1) the BRITISH considered forests as wildernesses which must be brought under cultivation to enhance the income of the state.


2) They directly encouraged the production of cash crops like jute , cotton , etc.


3) Need for sleepers in railway building.


4) the British gave vast areas at cheap rates to European planters and the contractors to provide wood needed for shipbuilding.


5) By 1890's British sent experts to discover the forest resources of India. The forests in India were cut at a massive scale to meet the needs of timber for shipbuilding.
