What are the causes for the complex nature of politics and demand in the north east region?

The Northeast region consists of 7 states, also referred to as the seven sisters. The region has only 4% of the country’s population but about twice as much share of its area. A small corridor of about 22 kms connects the region to the rest of the country. Other than that, the region shares boundaries with China, Myanmar and Bangladesh and serves as India’s gateway to Southeast Asia.

(ii) Complex social character.

(iii) Backwardness in comparison to other parts of the country;

(iv) Vast international border;

(v) Weak communication between the North-East and the rest of India.

The issues that dominates are demands for autonomy, movements for secession and opposition to outsiders.
