what are the causes of altitude sickness?

When one climbs a mountain of scales over a higher altitude there availability of oxygen goes on decreasing . An thus the mountaineer or the person who is at high altitude doesnt get enough oxygen and thus it results in altitude sickness.
hence we see most of the mountaineers carrying oxygen cylinders to prevent themselves from altitude sickness.
