What are the causes of Land Degradation ? What are the ways to conserve the land degradation ?
Answers
Answer:
1)Taking the form of desertification, deforestation, overgrazing, salinization, or soil erosion, land degradation can be caused by biophysical factors, such as the natural topography of an area or its rainfall, wind, and temperature; and unsustainable land management practices, such as deforestation, soil nutrient mining.
2)Suggested methods in reducing land degradation include the following: Gardening, Conservation Tillage, Using Fertilizers, Afforestation and Reforestation, Constructing Wind Breakers and Responsible Industrial and Chemical Waste Management
Causes of land degradation are as follows:
- Deforestation
- Over grazing
- Mining
- Over irrigation
- Mineral processing industries
Let's discuss the above points :
1.Deforestation : Cutting down of tress cause the soil to degrade.Tress holds the soils tightly which makes them loosen when we cut down.
2.Over grazing:Over grazing done by cattle also causes land degradation and soil erosion.Cattle eats grass with uproot which causes the removal of top soil and hence land degradation.
3.Mining: Extraction of minerals and ores from the earth's surface by digging. After obtaining sometimes mining workers forget to cover the pit and hence it the land is degraded.
4.Over irrigation: Over irrigation means flows if water in excess to plants.Excess flows of water carries away soils top layer along with which makes the soil alkaline( chemically) and saline.
5.Mineral processing industries: Mineral processing industries e.g.,satna ( in Madhya Pradesh) cement processing and making industry. While making the product into final product many fine particles gets emitted from that which goes into the environment and hence after deposited on the layer of the soil which makes land degradation.
Ways to conserve land degradation
- Afforestation (planting of tress)
- management of grazing land
- Regulating mining
- Drip irrigation & sprinkler system
Drip irrigation => Watering the plants drop by drop.
Benefit: Less wastage of water or no overflows of water.
Sprinkler system: Watering the crops in the form of shower.
