General Characteristics of Bryophytes:

Plants occur in damp and shaded areas.

The plant body is thallus like, i.e. prostrate or erect.

It is attached to the substratum by rhizoids, which are unicellular or multicellular.

They lack true vegetative structure and have a root-like, stem-like and leaf-like structure.

Bryophytes are the cryptogam (plant with no seed)  of the plant kingdom. Some of its characteristics are :-

1)  It has thallus body (differentiate).

2) They have no true roots, leaves ,stems.

3) They have Rhizoids that are attach to the substratum.

4)  Their main plant body is haploid that produces gametes , called as a gametophyte.

5)  They have separate archegonium(female sex organ) and antheridium( male sex organ).

6) They reproduce by producing multicellular spores, called as a sporophyte.
