Characteristics of Sound

A sound can be characterized by the following three quantities:

(i) Pitch.

(ii) Quality.

(iii) Loudness.

Pitch is the frequency of a sound as perceived by human ear. Higher the frequency, high is the pitch. Similarly, lower the frequency, low is the pitch.

A pure tone is the sound of only one frequency, such as that given by a tuning fork or electronic signal generator.

The fundamental note has the greatest amplitude and is has a larger intensity. This determines the quality of a sound.

Loudness is a physiological sensation. It depends mainly on sound pressure but also on the spectrum of the harmonics and the physical duration.
The above mentioned points are the characteristics of sound.
Thank you. Hope it helps.

The most basic characteristics of a sound wave are pitch, loudness, tone,a sound wave frequency is experienced as the wave's pitch. The amplitude determines amplitude or volume. The tone of a sound was can be recognise by the regularity of its vibration.
