classically speaking, anything that have mass and occupy space is called matter. it comprises fundamentally three states of matter viz solid liquid and gases, sometimes plasma is called as fourth state of matter (even though there are some more named Bose Einstein's condensate, fermionic condensate and quark gluon plasma).
Now matter is made up of small innumerable particles, it's characteristic are:
-they have spaces between them called inter molecular spaces
-these particles attract each other by a force called inter molecular spaces
-Due to the presence of kinetic energy in them these particles move( which increases with temperature?
-based on the above criteria the matter is classified into three main states
solid: less spaces, more force, less kinetic energy
liquid: all three moderate
gases:large spaces, weak forces, lot of kinetic energy.

The characteristics of particles of matter are as follow:
•They are very small.
•They are in motion, i.e. continuously moving.
•They have some empty space between them
•There exist force of attraction between them.
