the reason for not growing indigo is that Indigo with its roots exhaust this very much at no time. so after the harvest of Indigo rice could not be grown in that same field. the income that they got from their planters were very low and they cannot survive from it. they often have to take money from the money lenders and if they failed to pay it they would be evicted from the land. this created discontentment among the people. so eventually the people led strikes and hartal against planters to them free from the Indigo production. how was the British government help them but not hurt them so much. at last with all the struggles of people they manage to throw out the planters and grow their rice and wheat in their own land without growing Indigo.
