The Map Title- tells you what the map is all about. In this case the map title is located in the upper left hand corner. This map is called New York Road Network (USA). With this title you know the map is a map of the state of New York and it shows you major roads. 2. The Legend/Key- The legend show you what all of the different symbols on the map mean. The state capital is a dark circle with a ring around it. Knowing that information we an tell that the capital of New York is Albany. We know that major towns are marked by a red circle. Using out key we know that major cities in New York include... New York, Buffalo, Rochester, Syracuse, and Plattsburgh. 3. The Compass Rose- The compass rose which is located in the upper right hand corner of this map tell us directions. In this case the compass is symbol and only tells you the direction of the north, which is more than enough. (remember Never East Soggey Waffles to fill in the rest of the compass) Using this compass we know that Troy, New York is north of Peekskill, New York. 4. Scale- This map is lacking a clear scale, it informs you that the map is not to scale. A scale will show you actual distance between two places, or the size of a place. (ex. 1 inch equal 1 mile)
