Here is a simple illustration of two waves of same wavelength and same amplitude interfering constructively (a) and destructively (b).

For constructive interference the phase difference between the two waves must be 2nπ, n = 0, 1, 2, 3, ...
destructively
For destructive interference the phase difference between the two waves must be (2n+1)π, n = 0, 1, 2, 3, ......
constructively
