Question:-

What are the conditions for the formation of an electrovalent bond?

Answer:-

When an ionic compound is formed, the neutral atom is charged to a cation or an anion .The formation of cation and anion depends on following factors:-

  1. Low ionisation potential - If the ionisation potential of a particle of atom is low,it will lose electrons easily,i.e...a cation is formed easily.
  2. High electron affinity- If the electrons affinity is high, anion will be formed easily,i.e..a high electron affinity value favours ionic bounding.
  3. Large electronegativity diffrence- If the diffrence of the electronegitivities of 2 elements is higher ,then the transfer of the electrons will be easily.

Therefore, more the diffrence in electronegativity, more will be the ionic nature of the resulting compounds.
