for optical isomerism assymetric carbon have to be chiral in nature. chiral means that assymetric carbon have to be bonded with diffrent groups.

To exhibit Optical Isomerism, the compound should have at least 1 CHIRAL CARBON.

A chiral carbon is the one which has all the 4 of its Valencies occupied by different groups.

A chiral carbon is also said to be ‘‘Non

super imposable’’ with its mirror image.

Further more, the compound should NOT have a Plane of Symmetry.
