The dimpling river and the dusty roads are mentioned in the poem 'Foreign Lands' by Robert Louis Stevenson.

The poet saw the dimpling river flow which was like a looking-glass for the blue skies. Here the expression dimpling river refers to the indentations formed on the surface of the river which made it look charming. The water was clear and reflected the blue colour of the sky.

While the dusty roads were high and low and people walked on them when they went to town. The indentations on the surface of the dusty road did not add to its beauty. People tramped on it.
