The Earth is divided into three heat zones. These are as follows.
1) Torrid Zone
2) Temperate Zone
3) Frigid Zone
The Frigid Zone - The Frigid Zone is further divided into two zones : the North Frigid Zone and the South Frigid Zone.
a) The North Frigid Zone : It lies between the Arctic Circle 66.5 degrees North and the North pole 90 degrees North. It covers 4.12 % of Earth's total surface.
b) The South Frigid Zone : It lies between the Antarctic Circle 66.5 degrees South and the South Pole 90 degrees South. It covers 4.12 % of Earth's total surface.
The two frigid zones or polar zones, experience the midnight sun and the polar night for part of the year - at the edge of the zone there is one day at the winter solstice when the Sun is invisible, and one day at the summer solstice when the Sun remains above the horizon for 24 hours. In the center of the zone (the pole), the day is one year long with six months of daylight and six months of night. The two frigid zones are the coldest regions of the Earth and are generally covered with ice and snow.
The countries that lie in the frigid zone are as follows.
1) Canada's Northern most part of the Northwest Territories lies within this region at 66 degrees, 33 minutes North of the Equator, including Victoria Island, Ellesmere, a large part of Baffin Island and several other small islands.
2) The United States' Northernmost area of Alaska, including Brooks Range of mountains, lies above the Arctic Circle.
3) Most of the Greenland, a territory of Denmark, lies above the Arctic Circle.
4) The island nation of Iceland in the North Atlantic Ocean has just a tip of its territory, Grimsey Island situated 41 km North of the mainland, touching the line of the Arctic Circle.
5) Three of the European nations that make up the Scandinavia span partly into the Frigid Zone. Norway's Svalbard Island lie entirely within this region, as does the Northernmost tip of its mainland. Sweden's Northernmost region - part of Lapland, an area that includes Northern Finland and part of Russia's Kola Peninsula extends into Arctic Circle.
6) Russia, the largest country on Earth, has a long top section within the Arctic Circle that extends from European Russia to Siberia has more Arctic Territory than that any of other Frigid Zone nations.
