Although conventional maps made on flat surfaces provided adequate detail, they provided inaccurate sizes based on the position of countries in relation to the equator.
  • Putting a 3D planet on a 2D  map was something for early cartographer a real challenge, so Gerardus Mercator,Dutch cartographer and  geographer, came up with a solution. In 1569 he created a map which could be used for navigating purposes accurately but the disadvantage was that his system distorted the objects' size depending on their position in relation to equator. As a result, land masses such as Greenland and Antarctica appeared much larger than they actually are
