Mixing these two can cause serious damage sometimes. Bloodshed of thousand, burning of lands, accusing others, and relying on the orthodox beliefs and rules. So it is a good idea to keep the politics and the religion separate

A state or country consists of people having faith in many religions or disciplines or not having any faith in a religion at all.  If the country is secular, then all religions and faiths are equally respected and no particular religion is given priority according to law or constitution.

If a country and its constitution associate closely with a religion, then the feelings and rights of people of other religions are affected badly. People of the authorized religion will destroy the people of other religions.  The rule of the government is biased by the religious statements and principles.  The religion may not evolve as required by the modern civilization.

The state may not be favoured by the rest of the world in a free way. The development of the country may be affected.  There will be friends and enemies for the country based on religion.
