The demerits of democracy may include the following:

Making the wrong choice at elections and the elected leader is only interested in vote bank politics (corruption)

The people at times do not appreciate the power of their vote and do not therefore vote at all

Representatives may not be elected on merit. In a system of voting the majority rules and there's no distinction between the votes of the literate and the illiterate.

It takes long to take decisions and implement them

Authorities are usually working on short term goals as they have to face an election every so many years.

A lot of expenditure goes on elections. Candidates spend a lot on voters to influence them to vote for their party.

In many countries (especially Africa) the electorate in not knowledgeable and yet there is no distinction between their vote and those of the knowledgeable

Following are demerits of democracy-

1) Leaders keeps on changing this leads to instability.

2) Democracy is all about political competition and power play there is no scope for morality.

3) So many people have to be consulted before taking any decision in democracy which leads to delays.
 
4) Democracy leads to corruption.
