What are the difference between Acceleration and Retardation

Explanation:

Acceleration and retardation both are just the rate of change of velocity of a body or particle. As velocity and 'rate of change of velocity' are vectors, we can differentiate them on the basis of the direction of 'rate of change of velocity' with respect to  the direction of velocity. If the direction of both the 'rate of change of velocity' and velocity are same then the 'rate of change of velocity' is called acceleration. If the direction of 'rate of change of velocity' and velocity are opposite to each other then the 'rate of change of velocity' is called retardation.

Suppose velocity of a car increases from 10m/s to 20m/s in 5s, then acceleration of the car will be 2m/s2.

On the other hand, if velocity decreases from 20m/s to 10m/s in 5s, the acceleration will be −2m/s2. In other words, the retardation of the car is 2m/s2.
