In direct democracy individuals makes decisions for themselves, it is when all the population participates in a political. For example a referendum where by all the population gets a vote and their decisions is directly implemented. Here they vote for the actual legislation.
Indirect democracy is also known as representative democracy, this is when people elect government officials to make decisions on their behalf. Like you vote for a member of parliament to represent in the state. There is no voting here for direct legislation.
Democracy refers to the form of government elected by the people of a country themselves. It is derived from the Greek word demokratia combining demos (common people) and kratos (power).
New Zealand became the first nation to grant equal voting rights to all its citizens as early as 1893.
According to the 16th president of the USA. Abraham Lincoln, democracy is 'a government of the people, by the people and for the people'.
There are two types of democracy:-
1. Direct Democracy
2. Indirect Democracy
If the government is elected and run directly by the people, it is called direct democracy.
This, however, may not be practiced today, especially in countries with a large population.
Example:- Switzerland
The democracy in which people elect their representatives for a fixed term, who in turn form and run the government on the behalf of the people. This is called indirect or representative democracy.
