Well, the short answer is that an artificial satellite was made by humans, whereas a natural satellite was not.

But there are some other differences. Artificial satellites can be placed into nearly any orbit, including highly elliptical or inclined orbits, as well as retrograde orbits. Natural satellites tend to orbit their primaries in or close to the same plane, and in a prograde direction. (I should note that there are tons of exceptions to this rule.) This is a consequence of how they were formed.

Artificial satellites have masses of a few metric tons, on average. Their mass is limited by the fact that they must be lifted into orbit by big, expensive, dangerous rockets. Natural satellites, on the other hand, often have masses that are best expressed in scientific notation. Because they formed in orbit (or were captured after formation), there are fewer restrictions on their masses.

Artificial satellites are, at most, a few decades old. Natural satellites are billions of years old.

Artificial satellites can be controlled (somewhat) by using thrusters and maneuvering engines. Natural satellites are driven almost entirely by gravity. (Some comets get pushed around by gas jets, but that’s not the same as conscious control.)

Artificial satellites are powered by solar panels, RTGs (radioisotope thermoelectric generators), or fuel cells. They use electrical power to collect and transmit data to Earth, where humans process the data to learn about the solar system. Natural satellites don’t do any of that stuff. We can still learn about natural satellites by pointing our telescopes at them (and perhaps by sending probes), but we cannot make them transmit information to us. Space exploration would be much more convenient if we could.

Natural Satellites

1. The natural Satellites are celestial bodies that orbit a Planet or any other Celestial body.

2. These are formed by nature.

3. The most well known Natural Satellite is the Earth's Moon.

artificial Satellites

1. The artificial satellite is a device placed in orbit around the earth, moon, or another planet.

2. The artificial satellites are man made.

3. The first artificial satellite was Sputnik I.
