If the problem states that the rate of change of the variable in consideration is a constant then the resulting equation will be linear. For example, distance of a car from point A at a given time (t), when it’s moving at a constant speed in one direction.

If, however, the rate of change itself varies at a constant rate to the variable then the resulting expression will be quadratic. Taking the above example, if the car were to be accelerating at a constant rate, i.e. if the speed of the car is increasing at a constant rate, the that would result in a quadratic expression for distance in terms of time (t).
