where difference between day and night temperature is large ,rock expand and contract .they expand during the day, when temperature is high and contract during night when temperature is extremely low .this result in splitting of rock .example in the desert .

exfoliation :

the changes in temperature may create fissures or crack in rocks. water then enter into crack and outer layer of rock peels off.
