What are the differences between siliciclastic and chemical or biochemical sedimentary rocks?

Here is the basic distinction. Clastic rocks ( derived from Greek “klastos” broken in to pieces) are made from fragments of other rocks cemented and/or compressed into a solid unit. Chemical rocks ( Precipitates) are made from minerals that have dissolved into a solution, usually with water as the solvent, and the minerals are precipitated out into layers. Composition is mostly carbonates but halides are also common. Biochemical are derived from organic material and can be considered clastic in origin, like coquina and coal. As you can see there are many instances where origin and description overlap. Hope this helps. I studied sedimentary rocks for an entire semester. You would not believe the variety.
