Hard water also forms deposits that clog plumbing. These deposits, called "scale", are composed mainly of calcium carbonate (CaCO3), magnesium hydroxide (Mg(OH)2), and calcium sulfate (CaSO4). Calcium and magnesium carbonates tend to be deposited as off-white solids on the inside surfaces of pipes and heat exchangers.

1) Temporary Hardness :- Due to presence of Bicarbonates of Ca and Mg.

Ex :- Ca(HCO_{3})_{2} and Mg(HCO_{3})_{2}

2) Permanent Hardness :- Due to presence of soluble chlorides and sulphates of Ca and Mg.

Ex :- CaCl_{2} and CaSO_{4}
