There are three types of population pyramids: expansive, constrictive, and stationary. Expansive population pyramids depict populations that have a larger percentage of people in younger age groups. Populations with this shape usually have high fertility rates with lower life expectancies.

Different types of population:

The population is defined as the total number of persons living in a community and Details about their age, sex, etc.

According to the growth chart, the population is of 5 different types –

  • Early fluctuating type – Here the number of young people is maximum with a low or very less number of old people. This means the population is in high growth rate.
  • Early Expanding type – Here the population is growing steadily, with death rate very low and high birth rate.
  • Intermediate expanding type – Here the death rate is still lower than the birth rate, but difference is not that much. It means population maintains a steady number.
  • Low Fluctuating type – here the death rate is higher than that of birth rate and the number is decreasing.
  • Natural decrease – it means the population is decreasing at a high rate, with approximately no birth and a high death rate.
