There are four types of reactions :

A combination reaction is a reaction in which two reactants combine to form one product.

Example : Formation of water : 2H2 + O2 = 2H2O

 \\

When reactants on application of energy either in the form of heat, light or electricity breaks down into products, the reaction is termed as decomposition reaction.

Example : Decomposition of calcium carbonate : CaCO3 [s](Limestone) = CaO [s](Quick lime) + CO2 [g]

 \\

In a displacement reaction, a more reactive metal displaces a less reactive metal but a less reactive metal cannot displace a more reactive metal.

Example : CuSO4 + Fe = FeSO4 + Cu

 \\

A reaction involving the exchange of ions between the reactants is double displacement reaction.

Example : NaSO4 [aq] + BaCl2 [aq] = BaSO4 [s] + 2NaCl [aq]
