Answer. In the absence of oxygen When breakdown of glucose is carried out in the absence of oxygen in a cell, it is called as anaerobic respiration. This process is called as fermentation in microbes. Ethyl alcohol or lactic acid is produced by the breakdown of pyruvate.

There are two ways: aerobic and anaerobic. Aerobic includes glycolysis, then Krebs cycle and last ETC to produce ATP. Anaerobic includes fermentation (lactate or ethanol formation; depends on the conditions).
