Digestive enzymes are hydrolytic proteinaceous substances which cause breakdown of complex and insoluble components of food into simple, soluble and absorbable substances.

  • Salivary amylase :

Function : Converts starch to sugar.

  • Pepsin : ( Enzyme that breaks down the proteins )

Function :  Proteins to peptones

  • Trypsin : ( acts in alkaline medium )

Function : Peptones to peptides

  • Lipase :

Function : Fats to fatty acids + Glycerol

  • Enzymes in intestinal juices :

→ Carbohydrates ⇒ Glucose

→ Peptides to Amino Acids

→  Fats to fatty acid's + glycerol
