Disorders of Respiratory System:
1. Asthma: Spasm of smooth muscles in the walls of bronchioles resulting in difficulty in breathing.
Cause: Allergic reactions that lead to increased secretion of histamine.
Treatment: Epinephrine and glucocorticoids dilate respiratory tubes and suppress allergic reactions respectively.
2. Emphysema is a chronic disorder in which alveolar walls are damaged due to which respiratory surface is reduced. One of the major causes of this is cigarette smoking.
3. Pneumonia is an infection that inflames the alveoli which become filled with fluid or pus causing sever cough with phlegm, fever, chills, and difficulty in breathing.
4. Occupational Respiratory Disorders: In grinding, stone breaking and mining industries, so much dust is produced that the defence system of the body cannot fully cope with. Long exposure can give rise to inflammation leading to fibrosis (proliferation of fibrous tissue) and thus causing serious lung damage.
