Ecologically the Amazon basin is said to be very important. The ecological characteristics of Amazon basin are :

1. The Earth's 20% of fresh water is in Amazon only.

2. This is the house of numerous type of animals and plants some of which are very rare.

3. It has about 2 millons species of insects, a thousand species of fish and 600 species of mammals.

4. Disastrous consequences followed, attempts in recent years made to disturb the ecological balance by cutting trees in Amazon basin. The level of CO² (carbon dioxide) has gone up and there is threat of global warming.

Answer

★The enormous Amazon basin is made up of a web of ecosystems and unique landscapes.

★ This region produces about 20% of the Earth's oxygen and is vital to our survival.

★ Due to its diverse landscape, stable climate and proximity to the equator, the Amazon Rainforest is known as an ecoregion.

★Tropical rainforests across the world are highly diverse, but share several defining characteristics including climate, precipitation, canopy structure, complex symbiotic relationships, and diversity of species.

★The area is a low-lying valley almost entirely covered by tropical rainforest, criss-crossed by rivers including the mighty Amazon itself.

★The Amazon River is the world's largest in terms of volume of water reaching the sea. The river's network also forms the world's largest drainage system, with around 1100 river tributaries.

★These tributaries are often referred to as 'white' or 'black' rivers. White rivers (their actual colour is yellowish) often rise in the Andes, their tint resulting from heavy loads of mud and silt. Black rivers, conversely, rise in rocky basements from where little or no sediment is carried along.
