Time and again the Government of India and WHO together have shown our ability, competence and prowess to the whole world. With our combined meticulous work, done with full sincerity and dedication, we were able to get rid of polio. Today I would like to remind you of your potential and ability, and the big things we can do together. All of you in the field – Integrated Disease Surveillance Programme (IDSP), state rapid response teams and WHO - are our ‘surveillance corona warriors’. With your joint efforts we can defeat the coronavirus and save lives,” said Dr Harsh Vardhan, Minister of Health & Family Welfare, Government of India at a virtual meeting held in New Delhi on 15 April 2020.
The Minister, along with Dr Poonam Khetrapal Singh, Regional Director, WHO South-East Asia, was speaking at an interactive session with senior officials and field officers of the World Health Organization (WHO) as well as key central and state government health functionaries on further strengthening the partnership and the additional measures that can be taken for effective containment of COVID-19 in India.
“WHO is an important partner in our fight against the COVID-19. I really value guidance and contributions made by the WHO in containing spread of COVID-19 across the country,” said Dr Harsh Vardhan.
Speaking on the occasion, Dr Poonam Khetrapal Singh, Regional Director, WHO South-East Asia Region said that India has its unique challenges and also the capacity to overcome them, an example being elimination of polio in 2014.
"The National Polio Surveillance Project (WHO-NPSP) played a critical role in strengthening surveillance for polio that generated useful, timely and accurate data to guide policies, strategies and interventions until transmission of the poliovirus was interrupted in the country,” Dr Khetrapal Singh said.
Urging the WHO field staff to support the state and district governments, she said, “It is now time to use all your experience, knowledge and skills, with the same rigor and discipline that you showed while monitoring polio activities, to support districts with surveillance, contact tracing and containment activities.”
In his address, Dr Henk Bekedam,WHO Representative to India said that the WHO field personnel have been redirected to support the fight against COVID-19. “The same team worked tirelessly along with the government and other partner organizations to help India become polio-free. I am confident that the WHO team can once again join hands with the government to help win this fight against COVID-19,” he added.
WHO’s network of over 1600 experts and field personnel working across the country with state governments on National Public Health Surveillance Project, Tuberculosis, Neglected Tropical Diseases, hypertension and health systems strengthening are actively engaged in the COVID-19 response measures such as collection of detailed epidemiological information, scaling up surveillance for influenza-like illness (ILI) and severe acute respiratory infections (SARI) cases, contact tracing, capacity-building, laboratory diagnosis, hospital preparedness, infection prevention and control, and risk communications and community engagement.
The key dignitaries present at the meeting were: Mr Ashwini Kumar Chaubey, Minister of State for Health & Family Welfare; Mr Sanjeeva Kumar, Special Secretary MoHFW; Health Secretaries and National Health Mission Directors from state governments/union territories and other senior officials from the Ministry of Health & Family Welfare (MoHFW), Directorate General of Health Services, National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) and the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) as well as key officials from the WHO South-East Asia Region Office and experts and over 1600 field personnel of WHO deployed across the country.
