Sergei felt a sense of guilt and shame when he saw the beggar, Lushkoff trying to chop the wood. Sergei felt so because of two reasons.
Firstly, Sergei had caught Lushkoff lying. This embarrassed Lushkoff, because of which he was forced to listen to Sergei and chop wood. Lushkoff had not himself volunteered to do it, nor did he look like he wanted to do the hard work.
Secondly, Sergei could see that the beggar, Lushkoff was not physically very capable of chopping wood. The task required strength, which was missing in Lushkoff. Yet, the beggar tried to accomplish the task. When Sergei saw that Lushkoff could barely handle the axe, he felt guilty and ashamed of giving a difficult task to a man who was probably unwell and drunk. Also, it was too cold to be doing physical labour.
