The biggest problems is that overuse of chemical fertilizers has resulted to extreme deterioration of the soil. Today in some places in Punjab they are using 5 times more fertilizers than what they used initially.

Same is the story of pesticides and weedicides. The pests are resistant to most pesticides. More pesticides have to be used.

There has been very depletion of underground water. Earlier in Punjab water was found in less than 20 to 30 feet below. Today it has gone to over a 100 feet below.
