Abstract

Conducted a study to show that intolerance of ambiguity refers to 3 distinct clusters that can be predicted by cognitive variables derived from the cognitive orientation theory. 45 high school boys and girls were administered, in 3 sessions, 7 tasks yielding 12 measures of intolerance of ambiguity and questionnaires of cognitive orientation. Findings confirm the existence of 3 behavioral clusters--intolerance of situations admitting of multiple interpretations, situations difficult to categorize, and situations including contradictions--and the predictive power of cognitive orientation scores. The utility of specific rather than general cognitive orientation scores and the use of these scores for elucidating the meaning of common scales for measuring intolerance of ambiguity are demonstrated.
