Features of fungi :

  • It's the unique Kingdom of heterotropic organisms.

  • They show diversity in morphology and habitat

  • They can be free living or parasites in plants and animals.

  • They grow in warm, humid places

  • They don't have chrolophyll or chloroplasts

  • They can be saprophytic- those who feed on dead organic matter

  • They can be parasitic:- those who obtain their food from living organisms

  • Most of the fungi have mycelium, which is composed of hyphae.

  • A very few fungi are unicellular and non-mycelial

  • Their cell wall is made up of chitin

  • Their cell wall also contains polysaccharides, proteins, lipid and cellulose in small amount

  • Food is stored in the form of glycogen and oil

Examples:- Saccharomyces (Yeast), Rhizopus, Mucor
