The main role of the Panchayat was to look after the affairs of the village, i .e. , to resolve conflicts, maintain peace , construct roads , public buildings, wells, tanks, schools, bridges, agricultural and irrigational activities, health, sanitation and other social welfare activities. Besides, Panchayat performs the development work , such as look after the cattle, agriculture, fisheries, rural health and sanitation. It also constructs and maintains roads of villages, and establishes community centres. It promotes cooperative societies for irrigation and farming and for recreational activities, like melas, etc.
